Checks to make before you commit from abroad
A sequence for renting a home you have not stood in — what to read, what to ask for, and where to raise it if something is wrong.
Read the evidence, not the badge
Open the evidence panel and take the four checks one at a time: lister identity, authority to let, property inspection and location confirmed.
Look at how the inspection was done and when. Documents reviewed means nobody from Domicium has seen the property. A video walkthrough was guided by the lister. Only a physical inspection means an officer attended, and even then it describes the day it happened.
Ask for a live walkthrough of your own
A recorded or historic check is not the same as seeing the place today. Ask the lister to walk you through on a live call, and ask to see the things a photograph hides: water pressure, the meter, the state of the boys' quarters, the road in the rain.
Get someone to attend
Where you possibly can, have a relative or friend visit in person before any money moves. Ask them to confirm the address, that the property is empty, and that the person showing them round is the person you have been messaging.
Two of the things that most often go wrong remotely are a property that is already occupied and a person who is not the owner. Both are visible to someone standing outside the gate and invisible from a listing.
Keep everything on the platform
Conversations, agreed terms and recorded payments all sit in one place and cannot be quietly rewritten later. That record is what a complaint is decided on.
If something is wrong
Raise a complaint from your dashboard. Categories exist for a listing that does not match the property, for an agent posing as a landlord, for a deposit not returned, and for harassment, and the category sets how quickly a first response is due.
Complaints accumulate a history that cannot be edited or deleted, including by an administrator, and telling the other side is a deliberate step rather than an automatic one. Risk scoring can prioritise a case for review, but it cannot suspend or penalise anyone on its own — a person decides.
Still stuck?
